an american sentence for troy davis

What’s injected into one person is injected into us all.

This is my American Sentence for Troy Davis. Rethabile has asked that we write American Sentences today as a way of protesting Davis’ execution. Poetry most likely will not change what will happen to Troy, but it does allow us to keep from being silent about what’s going to happen to Troy. And, by extension, to us all.

We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. — Elie Wiesel

I have counted myself among the silent more often than I care to admit. — Dana Guthrie Martin

The people who fight for liberation and for human rights saved Troy Davis’ life last year. Let’s work hard this week and save Troy Davis’ life and restore his liberty this year. Your letters, when emailed and faxed to the Georgia State Board of Pardons & Paroles, will support a massive national rally against this planned execution. That rally will be in Atlanta on Thursday. The protests will carry over to the board’s hearing on Friday, September 12, 2008. Please join us with your letters and other expressions of support.

Please continue the struggle!

3. Dana - September 23, 2008

Rethabile, you’re the one who rocks.

4. Dana - September 23, 2008

Stay of execution issued. Read the story here.

5. paisley - September 23, 2008

i am making the rounds personally thanking everyone that took part in this..

my outrage will not be resolved with a simple stay of execution… this man must be granted a fair trial… i received an email form georgians for alternatives to the death penalty,,, and they said we will know monday if the supreme court will hear his case,, or if the execution will proceed… i am hoping beyond hope they decide to hear it..

6. Dana - September 23, 2008

You’re right, Paisley. The temporary stay is not enough. Not at all.

7. Holly D - September 24, 2008

Such a powerful statement, your American Sentence, and yes, I can relate all too well to the “often silent”
Thank you for your voice.

8. Dana - September 24, 2008

Holly, thanks. I hate admitting to my own silence and the complicity of that silence. But there it is. I am trying to be silent less. I am trying to raise a stink. ;)

9. christine - September 24, 2008

I feel bad I only found out about Troy’s case via Rethabile, since I live in Georgia!

I read how Troy refused the sedative and his last meal. How heartbreaking.

Your sentence is just right, and so true.

10. Dana - September 24, 2008

Thanks, Christine. He has a temporary stay. It’s only temporary, but it’s something.

11. scot - September 25, 2008

i wonder how many times this happens a year–good american sentence

12. Dana - September 25, 2008

Scot, do you mean how many are put to death, how many are put to death after being wrongly convicted or how many get temporary stays?

13. amy - November 22, 2008

i had never heard of american sentences until this week when i stumbled across the read write poem site; must’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere. this is a very powerful one, and you’ve put it to great use!
